  • 1 cup blackberries

  • ⅓ cup pure maple syrup
  • 4 Medjool dates pitted
  • 2 tablespoons water very hot; for the date paste
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot starch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract pure
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
Oat and pecan topping
  • 2 cups rolled oats certified gluten-free
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • ½ cup pecans chopped
  • ⅓ cup applesauce plain and unsweetened
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons almond butter plain and unsweetened; stir before measuring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract pure
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
Optional finish
  • coconut yogurt plain unsweetened vegan yogurt; for serving; optional
  • fresh mint for serving; optional

Equipment

  • 9-by-13-inch baking dish
  • oven-safe parchment
  • two mixing bowls
  • small food processor or blender suitable for dates
  • spoon
  • foil for a loose tent if needed
  • cutting board
  • sharp knife
  • measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Fit parchment into a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Soften the four pitted dates in the filling’s 2 tablespoons very hot water for 10 minutes, then process the dates and all that water into a thick paste, stopping to scrape. Use this time to prepare the fruit.
  2. In a large bowl, gently combine blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and the finely diced apples. Mix the filling’s maple syrup, date paste, lemon juice and zest, chia seeds, arrowroot, vanilla, cinnamon and salt until evenly combined. Fold through the fruit and spread in the baking dish.
  3. In a second bowl, combine oats, almond flour, pecans and the topping’s cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Stir in applesauce, maple syrup, almond butter and vanilla until small, moist clusters form. Scatter loosely over the fruit, squeezing a few teaspoon-size clumps together. Leave little gaps for steam to escape rather than pressing a solid lid over the filling.
  4. Bake for 45–60 minutes, checking after 40 minutes. The filling must bubble through gaps near the center and the apple pieces should be tender; browned edges alone do not show that the filling is ready. If the topping colors first, tent loosely with foil and continue baking. Expect lightly crisp browned clusters with tender interiors.
  5. Rest for 20 minutes so the berry juices thicken before spooning into eight portions. Serve warm rather than piping hot, with optional coconut yogurt and mint. The filling is soft and jammy, not a firm pie slice.

Notes

Fruit and doneness: The default uses fresh berries. Cut apples into small 1/4-inch pieces. Frozen berries can go in without thawing, but may add 10–15 minutes or more; use bubbling near the center and tender apples as the final cues.
Crumble texture: Applesauce and almond butter make moist clusters without a butter-based streusel. Small, loose clumps brown better than a thick compressed layer. Expect lightly crisp edges, especially while warm; stored topping softens.
Swaps and allergens: Contains almonds and pecans. Walnuts can replace pecans, or pears can replace apples, changing flavor and nutrition. Use certified gluten-free oats and suitable packaged ingredients for the gluten-free recipe. Changing one nut ingredient does not make the whole dish nut-free.
Timing and storage: The plan allows 25 minutes preparation, up to 60 minutes baking and 20 minutes resting. Cool promptly and refrigerate covered at 40°F (4°C) or colder for 3–4 days. Reheat individual portions thoroughly; dry oven heat helps the topping regain some texture.
Portions: Eight equal portions include all measured fruit, dates, maple, oats, nuts, seeds and topping. Optional yogurt, mint and additional accompaniments are excluded from nutrition.
