Crispy Air-Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

No ratings yet
Slender sweet potato fries turn golden at the edges in the air fryer, with smoky paprika, garlic and a light coating of avocado oil. Their centers stay tender and sweet. Give each batch room to cook, then serve promptly for the nicest contrast of soft middle and crisp edge.

Ingredients

Fries
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes scrubbed and cut into 1/4-inch-thick fries; peel if desired
  • 1 ½ tablespoons avocado oil
Seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
Optional seasoning
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon optional
Seasoning
  • 1 pinch black pepper

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • cutting board
  • sharp knife
  • mixing bowl
  • clean towel
  • measuring spoons
  • wire rack if needed

Method

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes, following its manufacturer’s guidance. Scrub the sweet potatoes, peel if desired and cut into even fries about 1/4 inch thick. Pat completely dry with a clean towel.
  2. Toss the fries with the avocado oil, salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper and optional cinnamon until lightly and evenly coated.
  3. Arrange half the fries in one uncrowded layer in the basket, leaving room for air to circulate. Cook for 12–15 minutes, shaking or turning halfway. Add a few minutes if needed, until browned at the edges and tender through the center; check early and watch closely near the end.
  4. Repeat with the second batch. Allow about 30 minutes for two batches; basket size and the exact cut can require more batches or a few extra minutes. Keep the first batch uncovered on a wire rack if waiting. Do not cover or stack them in a steamy bowl.
  5. Serve promptly for the best crisp edges and soft centers. Add a little optional chopped parsley or a suitable vegan dip if desired. Divide the batch into two servings.

Notes

Crisp edges: Sweet potato fries have tender centers and lightly crisp browned edges, rather than a deep-fried shell. Dry surfaces, even quarter-inch cuts and an uncrowded basket matter. This recipe uses no starch coating.
Batch timing: The 40-minute total allows preparation plus two cooking batches. A smaller basket may need more. Follow the appliance guidance and check doneness rather than relying only on the timer; sweet potatoes can brown quickly near the end.
Seasoning and diet: Choose vegan, gluten-free seasonings and any accompanying dip. The oil is part of the recipe, so no oil-free claim is made. Optional cinnamon, parsley and dips are excluded from the base nutrition.
Make ahead and storage: For advance cutting, cover the cut fries with cold water and refrigerate for up to 24 hours, then drain and dry very thoroughly before oiling. Refrigerate cooked fries promptly at 40°F (4°C) or colder for 3–4 days. Reheat in an air fryer around 350°F (175°C) for 3–5 minutes, checking often until thoroughly hot; stored fries soften.
