Crispy Air-Fryer Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet potato fries are at their most inviting when the edges have browned, the centers are tender and the seasoning leaves a little warmth on your fingertips. Smoked paprika, garlic and onion bring the savory side of the sweet potato forward. A light coating of avocado oil helps the narrow batons color in the air fryer.
There is no heavy coating here, and no promise of a deep-fried shell. The pleasure is the contrast between soft sweet centers and lightly crisp edges, especially when the fries come straight from a roomy basket to the table. Cut them evenly, work in batches and let the appliance do its work without crowding.

Start with even, dry quarter-inch fries
Scrub the sweet potatoes well and peel them if you like. Cut a thin slice from one side to make a stable base, then cut even planks and narrow batons about a quarter inch thick. Keep fingers clear and use a sharp knife on a steady board.
Try to keep the pieces similar in size. A mixture of thin wisps and thick chunks makes it harder to finish the batch together. Pat the cut fries thoroughly dry with a clean towel before adding oil. This recipe’s default does not require a soaking step, so you can move directly from cutting and drying to seasoning.
Coat lightly and season evenly
Toss the fries with the measured avocado oil first, then add salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and a pinch of pepper. Turn them through the bowl until the seasoning is distributed and the surfaces are lightly coated.
A small optional pinch of cinnamon brings another warm note, but the paprika-led version is deliciously savory on its own. Keep extra additions restrained so the sweet potato remains recognizable. Check spice blends and any dip for vegan, gluten-free and household allergen suitability.
Give the basket room to breathe
Preheat the air fryer according to its guidance, then arrange half the fries in an uncrowded single layer. Cook at 375°F, shaking or turning halfway, and begin checking near the shorter end of the suggested time. The centers should yield easily and the edges should be browned.
The recipe allows about thirty minutes for two batches. A smaller basket may need more batches, and a different cut may need a few more minutes. Watch closely near the end: sweet potatoes can color quickly. The doneness cues matter more than getting every batch out at an identical minute.
Protect the edges while the next batch cooks
If the first batch must wait, spread it uncovered on a wire rack rather than piling it into a covered bowl. Trapped steam softens those freshly browned edges. Cook the second batch with the same breathing room, then serve promptly.
A little optional chopped parsley gives a green finish, and a suitable vegan dip is welcome alongside. These fries can be a snack to share or a side for a bean burger, a sandwich or a simple bowl supper. Keep the rest of the plate ready so they do not sit while you finish everything else.
Make room for leftovers without promising the same crunch
For advance cutting, keep the fries covered with cold water in the refrigerator for up to twenty-four hours, then drain and dry them very thoroughly before oiling. Refrigerate cooked leftovers promptly at 40°F or colder and use within three to four days.
Reheat in the air fryer around 350°F, checking after a few minutes until thoroughly hot. Some surface texture returns, but stored fries will be softer than the first batch. Crispy Air-Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
Ingredients
Equipment
Method
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes, following its manufacturer’s guidance. Scrub the sweet potatoes, peel if desired and cut into even fries about 1/4 inch thick. Pat completely dry with a clean towel.
- Toss the fries with the avocado oil, salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper and optional cinnamon until lightly and evenly coated.
- Arrange half the fries in one uncrowded layer in the basket, leaving room for air to circulate. Cook for 12–15 minutes, shaking or turning halfway. Add a few minutes if needed, until browned at the edges and tender through the center; check early and watch closely near the end.
- Repeat with the second batch. Allow about 30 minutes for two batches; basket size and the exact cut can require more batches or a few extra minutes. Keep the first batch uncovered on a wire rack if waiting. Do not cover or stack them in a steamy bowl.
- Serve promptly for the best crisp edges and soft centers. Add a little optional chopped parsley or a suitable vegan dip if desired. Divide the batch into two servings.
