Method
- Add strawberries, 8 basil leaves, lime juice, 2 tablespoons maple syrup and cold water to a pitcher. Mash with a muddler or wooden spoon just until the berries release juice and the basil smells fragrant; do not pulverize the leaves.
- Taste the mixture and add the remaining tablespoon maple syrup if needed, depending on strawberry ripeness. For a smoother drink, strain through a fine sieve; for more fruit texture, leave it rustic.
- Divide ice among four tall glasses. Spoon or pour an equal amount of strawberry mixture into each.
- Top each glass with about 3/4 cup sparkling water, stirring once gently. Garnish with a basil leaf and lime wheel if using. Serve promptly while lively with bubbles.

Notes
Herb aroma: Press basil gently enough to release fragrance. Aggressive blending or prolonged muddling can make it taste grassy.
Sweetness: Start with 2 tablespoons maple syrup and taste; very ripe berries may need no additional sweetness.
Make ahead: Prepare the berry-lime base up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerate covered. Add sparkling water and ice only at serving.
Texture: Strain for an elegant clear-ish cooler or keep small strawberry bits for a more rustic drink.
Seasonal option: Frozen strawberries can be thawed and used for the base when fresh berries are out of season.
Storage: The finished fizzy drink is best enjoyed immediately; the base alone keeps refrigerated up to 24 hours.
Nutrition is estimated for one of four drinks, using two tablespoons maple syrup in the pitcher. Optional garnishes and extra sweetener are excluded; fruit ripeness, basil size, sparkling water brands, and portions vary.
