A little planning makes room for more joy

When we’re cooking for around 15 people, we plan for generous servings and a table full of choices. About 8–10 pounds of potatoes works beautifully for a crowd that loves seconds, while 3½–4 pounds of sweet potatoes can be just right among several other sides. We make cranberry sauce and pies ahead, prep the appetizers the day before, and leave plenty of breathing room in the oven and slow cookers.

Pick one centerpiece, a few sides you can’t wait to taste, something fresh, a welcome-to-the-table nibble and a dessert worth saving room for. Candles, music, and an unhurried moment together do the rest.
